Understanding the connectivity and dynamics of avian influenza

Consortium

The Consortium consists of four full partners, three associated institutes and three cooperation partners from Europe, North America and Asia.

All partners have extensive expertise in their research fields, and the planned research is synergistic with other activities (e.g., reference lab functions, ornithology and ecology data collection) and international stakeholders (WHO, ECDC, EFSA, FAO/WOAH/OFFLU, EU-NRLs). The KAPPA-FLU consortium has broad expertise and a long track-record of successful EU research programs, from earlier projects like FP5-NOVAFLU, NEWFLUBIRD, ANTIGONE, PREDEMICS and COMPARE, to ongoing H2020 projects (DELTA-FLU, VEO), EFSA (OC/EFSA/ALPHA/2021/01) and roles of partners as key national and international reference laboratories for avian influenza (FAO, WOAH, EU), human influenza (WHO NIC), veterinary epidemiology (FAO) and risk analysis and modelling (EFSA, WOAH). This is also impressively illustrated by the research work of the consortium partners in the last months. Important findings like the first report regarding the introduction of HPAI H5N1 viruses into North America, the role of Iceland as a stepping stone and the genetics of the current European H5N1 strains were published under the leadership and broad participation of members of the KAPPA-FLU consortium.

All WPs are linked by the management activities, which will ensure the advancement of the project, also by offering an appropriate management structure.
